A brighter, better year ahead!

Filipinos always look forward to a better new year. Whatever the tragedies and crises experienced in the year that was, whether these be the worst of storms, floods, flu scares, volcanic eruptions, sea mishaps, bombings, massacres, hunger and poverty, or even the global economic crisis, Pinoys in general seem to profess a spirit of optimism unmatched in any part of the world.

Many will be seeking spiritual guidance from their respective fellowships. There are also the traditional fortune tellers and geomancy experts who will be saying encouraging words to clients, while offering lucky charms and mantras for a price. But ask the common Pinoy what he or she thinks the coming year will be. Most respondents will say that the new year will be brighter, better. There is hope, that is the meaning and the message.

Come 2010, the much-anticipated election festivities and drama will build up, unfold one by one, and sometimes offer the country life-changing surprises. The candidates, their allies and operators will battle tirelessly until the winners are securely seated by mid-year. For sure, the decadent political culture will show its ugliness, that of immense greed for power. Political violence remains a major threat to everybody, whether they are players or bystanders. Widespread fraud, cheating and a no-elections scenario remain possibilities. The risks are high.

On the positive side of the equation, 2010 offers an opportunity for Filipinos to start claiming the kind of change every citizen hopes for. The majority has waited long and suffered much just to let the incumbent administration end its term. This mistake, perhaps due to apathy, has cost so much in human, spiritual and material resources. This year gives us a chance to choose, to assert the platforms and candidates, to express what we think must be beneficial for the population and of course, to elect whom we believe can best serve the country.

Experiences accumulated in 2009 are there to provide lessons that ought to help us through 2010. Most Pinoys may not have much financial resources to speak of, but most Pinoys have the fighting spirit to cope with life's challenges.

The days of mere complaining and bearing the brunt ought to end. Let us constantly remind each other and our authorities of the collective task of building a better life for ours and for future generations. The problems we see everyday, they are probably still there because there are not enough problem-solvers who dare to get things fixed. Let us dare to offer solutions. One thing that the country needs is a symphony of actions that will translate to personal and social change. Let every Pinoy inspire that positive vision. Let 2010 bring new beginnings.

Happy New Year!
